Holiday Advice. Two sure ways to ruin a motoring holiday abroad are to fall foul of the law and to break down.
So Europ Assistance, the leading provider of motor breakdown assistance, is advising UK motorists heading for the sun to make sure they are up to date on driving laws across the Continent to avoid hassle while they are away. Regular travellers may not realise for instance, that as a fuel-saving measure the national speed limit in Spain was reduced from 120kph (75 mph) to 110kph (68mph) .
Meanwhile in France, where speed limits vary according to geographical location, the vehicle and the weather, you can have your EU driving licence confiscated on the spot if you exceed the restriction by more than 40 km/h.

More information on driving abroad can be found at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office web site at www.fco.gov.uk.
If you do break down, then an investment in Europ Assistance’s single-trip European Motor Breakdown policy will pay dividends. One call connects to an English-speaking operator, who can summon repairers from Europ Assistance’s huge network to get you back on the road as quickly as possible. If the worst comes to the worst, you and your vehicle will be transported home at no additional cost.
Europ Assistance can even help if your car is broken into and items are stolen. The emphasis at all times is on providing emergency assistance to get you back on the road and minimise disruption to your holiday. Don’t leave it to the last minute either. With a policy in place well before you travel, you can be covered if your vehicle breaks down and cannot be repaired during the week before you are due to leave home.
Remember, breakdown assistance cover complements, not replaces, motor accident insurance (be sure to check with your insurers that you are covered abroad). You will also need travel insurance, including medical cover, to complement the cover provided under the EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) scheme.
Buying Europ Assistance travel insurance and breakdown cover at the same time is easy to do. Plus you will have the support of Europ Assistance’s global network.
Each year the Europ Assistance Group provides over 2.5 million motorists with breakdown assistance. www.europ-assistance.co.uk
